Komada Architects Office – BASE

Komada Architects Office - BASE

This project started from such words of the clients “we need to have our own base”. The art-event planning office is at the first floor and the 2nd or 3rd floor are dwellings. It is a small complex of a office and a house, built on the site of 33m2.

On the first floor, office opens to the town,on the 3rd floor, living space opens to the sky and on the 2nd floor, private space is complicated and intimate but not closed. And the stair case which pierces through these floors.

This small building of the maximum volume allowed on laws and regulations is a place like a base of living where they protect themselves, associate with others, earn their dairy bread, connect to the nature, and gaze themselves

Central Washington River House by McClellan Architects

Central Washington River House by McClellan Architects

The River House is located on the Columbia River in eastern Washington. The house was designed for a young family as a weekend retreat and has a separate guest house over the garage. The home takes full advantage of the views to the river and the sage brush covered mountains. McClellan Architects also designed a lower outdoor dining room just off of the pool so that the family can enjoy the long summers.

This weekend cottage sits at the base of the Cascade foothills, opening to the banks of the Columbia River. It is home to a family of four. A guest bunkhouse and outdoor rooms define the grounds, creating a seamless relationship between inside and out.

The design program for this house emphasized its relationship to the outside and the river. The house establishes a demarcation between the desert and the river oasis. As one descends through the site the building forms open, embracing the site.

Yachting House Design Ideas by MOOMOO Architects

Yachting House Design Ideas by MOOMOO Architects

Designing a home for an investor with a well-defined and specific passion is always a challenge for an architect; however, it demonstrates the interdisciplinary knowledge of the designer. Our client’s love and passion for motor yachts became our motto for this project. The design process did not comprise only of finding a style that related to the boat, but also finding a place to anchor the yacht within the house’s structure.

A bold decision was made to introduce a water canal through the central area in the house and having a lock lift which would allow the boat to sail in along the line of windows in the kitchen and living room. The investor can admire this view from any place in the house, like for example while enjoying a cup of morning coffee in the dining room.

The house area is 700 meters squared (this does not include storage rooms, mechanical rooms and the garage.) The house is embedded on a steep slope that is in close proximity to the shorelines. The house takes on the architectural form of the letter „U” and is oriented towards the lake giving its occupants an open and private space with an extraordinary view towards the body of water.

The garden area was established by the relationship between the house and the annexe, which encompasses the guest apartment and garden leisure lounge. The garden is not the typical garden one would find by a house because it has a yacht moored in it, but in spite of that, one is able to host garden parties, or sunbathe on a lounger by the pool.

The house relates to the yacht not only in style and function, but also in detail. Mooring handles inspired the railings on the terraces and the lounge areas have a change of floor level, which relate to the seating arrangements on the stern of a boat. The interior of the house is characterized by simplicity and is finished of with the warm tones of wood.

Casa Joya by House + House Architects

Casa Joya by House + House Architects

A wondrous life path that meandered through Spain, France, New York and California, eventually wandered into a tiny town in Mexico. Having designed their home in San Francisco, we invited a young family to enjoy our vacation home in San Miguel de Allende. It was love at first sight and they soon asked us to find a piece of land and design a second home for them. What we found was a 10 by 10 meter urban lot at the end of a narrow pedestrian lane.

Dimensions guided every decision in fitting living, dining, kitchen, family, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, powder, as well as a courtyard, garden, terraces and balconies into a 33 foot cube, the perfect size for a jewel box. Curving arcs link each space to the outdoors, swept with shimmers of sunlight that change throughout the day. The triangular spiral stair spins movement up to the roof terrace for evening viewing of luminous sunsets behind myriad church towers and domes. Walls washed with naturally pigmented lime glow soft and warm under the sun light pouring through the skylight above the stairway.

Spaces borrow from each other, layering together in the illusion of a grander volume. Bi-folding doors sweep walls away in the comfortable climate and the 20 foot tall stone fountain water wall sends ripples of light and sound to complement the sounds of roosters, church bells and calls from wandering vendors. Black cantera stone floors are locally quarried and the chipped stone pattern in the courtyard tells the life path of the owners.

Windows, doors and railings are fabricated by the blacksmith, the flaming sculpture in the fireplace assembled by the plumber, the gridded entry door, cabinets and dining table that opens to seat ten fabricated by the carpenter in his open air taller. The craftsmen who built this home have worked with us for the last 15 years, men who bring a spiritual joy to their work that stays behind in the places they build, imbuing them with an aura of magic.

Residential Lakefront House Design Ideas by McClellan Architects

Residential Lakefront House Design Ideas by McClellan Architects

Designed by McClellan Architects, this residential lakefront home was built on a challengingly steep site, this home embraces its waterfront location. The varied outdoor spaces offer both privacy and invitation, creating a rich dialog between shelter and grounds. From front entry to back terrace there is a steady progression from masonry walls to a more open and lighter structure of steel and wood.

The steep terrain of the site presented a challenge to siting the house at a plateau along the water’s edge. The garage and second floor ADU were placed along the toe of the 40 foot high bluff to retain the bluff, and to increase the level area at the base.

To maximize the home’s views to the water, the rooms are strung along a line following the coastline, grouped into two masses: the two story residential quarters and a glassy public pavilion which opens to the outdoor deck and pool. The two forms are bridged by the entry with framed views to the water.
